A comprehensive guide to Vietnam pet import regulations in 2026. Learn about microchip, rabies vaccination, and veterinary health certificate requirements.

Pet Importation Overview

Vietnam permits the importation of personal pets (dogs and cats) without mandatory quarantine, provided all entry requirements and documentation are strictly met upon arrival at a designated entry port. Travelers must also hold a valid entry document, such as a Vietnam eVisa, for themselves.

Documentation Requirements

To import a dog or cat into Vietnam, the following documentation is required:

  • ISO-Compliant Microchip: A 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip is recommended to verify the animal's identity against veterinary records and for standard international airline regulations.
  • Rabies Vaccination Certificate: Proof of rabies vaccination administered at least 30 days and no more than 12 months prior to the date of arrival in Vietnam.
  • Veterinary Health Certificate: An official health certificate issued and endorsed by the competent veterinary authority of the departure country (e.g., USDA in the United States, DEFRA in the United Kingdom). This document is typically valid for 7 to 10 days prior to departure.

Import Permit Requirements

Travelers importing 1 or 2 personal pets do not require a formal import permit, regardless of whether entering via a visa exemption or a 90-day eVisa. However, importing 3 or more animals requires a commercial import permit issued by the Department of Animal Health (DAH) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. This application must be submitted at least 14 days prior to travel.

Port of Entry Process

Upon arrival at a recognized international airport (such as Noi Bai International Airport or Tan Son Nhat International Airport), pets are typically retrieved at the designated oversized baggage or cargo terminal. The traveler must present the animal along with all original documentation (health certificate, vaccination records, and passport) to the quarantine officer on duty.

Original documents must be carried in hand luggage. If documents are incomplete or invalid upon arrival, the pet may be subject to quarantine at the owner's expense or denied entry into the country.
