Understanding Vietnam Customs Regulations in 2026
Upon arrival in Vietnam, all travelers are subject to customs clearance following immigration processing. Compliance with current customs regulations is mandatory to avoid penalties, confiscation of goods, or legal action. These regulations apply uniformly across all 83 international entry ports, regardless of whether travelers hold a Vietnam eVisa or a visa exemption.
Duty-Free Allowances
Vietnam provides specific duty-free allowances for personal items. Goods exceeding these allowances must be declared at customs, and applicable taxes must be paid. As of 2026, the duty-free limits for travelers aged 18 and older are as follows:
- Spirits and alcohol with 20% ABV or higher: 1.5 liters
- Alcohol under 20% ABV: 2.0 liters
- Beer and alcoholic beverages: 3.0 liters
- Cigarettes: 200 cigarettes
- Cigars: 20 cigars
- Tobacco: 250 grams
- Personal belongings: Quantities appropriate for the purpose and duration of the trip.
- Other items: Total value not exceeding 10,000,000 VND.
Travelers carrying items that exceed these limits must proceed to the Red Channel to make a customs declaration. All other travelers may use the Green Channel.
Currency and Asset Declaration Limits
Strict limits govern the amount of currency and assets that may be carried into or out of Vietnam without formal declaration. A customs declaration form is mandatory if carrying:
- Cash exceeding $5,000 USD (or equivalent in other foreign currencies).
- Cash exceeding 15,000,000 VND (Vietnamese Dong). For further details on currency, consult our currency guide.
- Gold weighing 300 grams or more (including jewelry and bullion).
- Precious metals or gemstones with a value exceeding 300 million VND.
Failure to declare currency or assets exceeding these thresholds may result in severe administrative fines or confiscation by border authorities.
Prohibited Items
To ensure national security and public safety, the importation of the following items is strictly prohibited. Violations carry severe legal consequences under Vietnamese law:
- Narcotics and illicit drugs.
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and military technical equipment.
- Toxic chemicals and radioactive materials.
- Anti-government materials, politically sensitive publications, and pornography.
- Firecrackers and related explosive devices.
- Used consumer goods (including used clothing, textiles, vehicles, and auto parts).
- Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and flycams, unless authorized by a permit from the Ministry of Defense.
Prescription medications for personal use are permitted. Travelers must carry the original prescription or a medical letter, particularly for painkillers or psychotropic substances.
Special Regulations: Drones and Medications
Drones require a specialized permit issued by the Ministry of Defense prior to use in Vietnam. Unpermitted drones may be confiscated by customs upon entry and returned upon departure. For personal medication, travelers are permitted to bring a maximum 7-day supply of addictive medications and a 10-day supply of psychotropic medications, provided they are accompanied by a valid prescription.
