If you are traveling overland from southern Cambodia (Kep or Kampot) to the Mekong Delta or Phu Quoc, you will likely use the Ha Tien border crossing. Here is your 2026 guide.
Overview of the Ha Tien Border
The Ha Tien border crossing connects the Prek Chak checkpoint in Kampot Province, Cambodia, with the Ha Tien checkpoint in Kien Giang Province, Vietnam.
It is a popular route for backpackers traveling along the coast from Cambodia into the Mekong Delta, or for those catching a ferry from Ha Tien town directly to Phu Quoc Island.
This border is often referred to locally as the 'Xa Xia' border crossing on the Vietnamese side.
Visa Requirements for Entering Vietnam
You cannot get a Visa on Arrival at the Ha Tien land border. You must arrange your visa in advance.
- **Vietnam eVisa:** The Ha Tien land border *does* accept the Vietnam eVisa. When applying online, you must select 'Ha Tien Landport' as your entry point. If you select a different port, you may be denied entry.
- **Visa Exemption:** If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country (like the UK, France, Germany, Japan, or ASEAN nations), you can enter without a prior visa, usually for 15-45 days depending on your nationality.
The Crossing Procedure (Cambodia to Vietnam)
The process of crossing the border is generally straightforward but involves a bit of walking between checkpoints in the hot sun.
- **Step 1: Exit Cambodia:** Arrive at the Prek Chak checkpoint. Go to the Cambodian immigration window to get your exit stamp. There should be no official fee for this, though border guards sometimes ask for a $1-$2 'coffee money' bribe.
- **Step 2: Walk to Vietnam:** Walk about 200 meters down the road through 'no man's land' to the Vietnamese checkpoint (Ha Tien/Xa Xia).
- **Step 3: Enter Vietnam:** Present your passport and printed eVisa at the Vietnamese immigration desk. They will stamp your passport. Again, there are no official fees if you already hold an eVisa.
- **Step 4: Customs:** Put your bags through the X-ray scanner. Once clear, you step out into Vietnam.
Getting to and from the Border
The border is relatively remote.
**On the Cambodian Side:** If you are coming from Kampot or Kep, you can hire a tuk-tuk or take a minivan. A tuk-tuk from Kep takes about 45 minutes and costs roughly $15-$20 USD.
**On the Vietnamese Side:** The border is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from Ha Tien town center. You will usually find xe om (motorbike taxis) and standard taxis waiting outside the border gate. A taxi to Ha Tien town or the ferry terminal (for boats to Phu Quoc) should cost around 100,000 - 150,000 VND ($4-$6 USD).
