If you are married to a Vietnamese citizen, you have excellent options for long-term residency. Here is the 2026 guide to Spouse Visas and Exemptions.
Options for Foreign Spouses
In 2026, foreign spouses of Vietnamese citizens generally choose between two main immigration pathways based on how long they plan to stay in the country without leaving.
1. The 5-Year Visa Exemption Certificate
This is the most popular and affordable option for spouses who travel frequently or do not mind doing a quick border run every 6 months.
- **Validity:** Up to 5 years (must expire at least 6 months before your passport expires).
- **Max Stay Per Entry:** You can stay for up to **180 days (6 months)** at a time.
- **The 6-Month Reset:** After 180 days, you must physically exit Vietnam (e.g., cross into Cambodia or fly to Thailand) and re-enter to reset the clock for another 180 days. In-country extensions are occasionally granted, but leaving is generally easier and cheaper.
- **Requirements:** Original passport, marriage certificate, and your spouse's Vietnamese ID card/household registry.
2. The TT (Dependent/Family) Visa & TRC
If you plan to live in Vietnam permanently and want to avoid the 6-month border runs, you should apply for a TT Visa, which can then be upgraded to a Temporary Residence Card (TRC).
- **TT Visa Validity:** Usually granted for up to 12 months.
- **The TRC Upgrade:** Once you enter Vietnam on a TT Visa, your spouse can sponsor you for a Spousal TRC. A Spousal TRC is valid for up to **3 years**.
- **Max Stay:** With a TRC, you can live continuously in Vietnam for the entire 3-year duration without ever needing to leave.
- **Consularization:** Be warned that applying for a TRC requires all foreign documents (like your foreign marriage certificate) to be officially legalized/consularized and translated into Vietnamese by a state notary.
Important: A marriage visa or a 5-Year exemption does NOT give you the legal right to work in Vietnam. If you intend to take a job, your employer must still apply for a Work Permit on your behalf.
