Riding a foreign-registered motorcycle into Vietnam is no longer a simple border hop. Here are the strict 2026 regulations you must navigate.
Can You Ride a Foreign Motorcycle into Vietnam?
Yes, but it is extremely heavily regulated. In 2026, under Decree No. 151/2024/ND-CP, you **cannot** simply arrive at a land border with a foreign-registered motorcycle and expect to cross. You are legally required to organize your entry through a licensed Vietnamese international travel service company.
The Strict New Approval Process
To legally bring your bike across borders (from Laos, Cambodia, or China), you must secure permits well in advance:
- **Mandatory Tour Operator:** You must hire a licensed Vietnamese tour operator to submit your vehicle and passport details to the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Public Security. This process takes 15 to 30 days.
- **Mandatory Escort:** Once your bike is approved and you cross the border, you are not allowed to ride independently. You must travel in a convoy escorted by a guide vehicle (car or motorcycle) provided by your tour operator.
- **Pre-approved Route:** Your permit is only valid for a specific, pre-approved itinerary. Deviating from this route can lead to the confiscation of your motorcycle.
Required Documentation at the Border
When you arrive at the border (e.g., Lao Bao, Moc Bai, or Tay Trang), the customs and immigration officials will check the following:
- **Vietnam eVisa:** You must hold a valid eVisa with the correct land border specified as your entry port.
- **International Driving Permit (IDP):** Vietnam only recognizes IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. It must include a Class A (motorcycle) endorsement. A 1949 Geneva Convention IDP (issued by the USA, UK, and Australia) is NOT valid.
- **Original Vehicle Registration:** The original blue card or registration document from the motorcycle's home country.
- **Ministry Approval Letter:** The official approval letter secured by your tour operator.
Because of the high costs associated with hiring a tour operator and an escort vehicle for the duration of your trip, most independent travelers now choose to park their bikes in a neighboring country and simply buy or rent a local Vietnamese motorcycle upon crossing.
