Navigating Vietnam customs is straightforward if you know the rules. Discover the 2026 duty-free limits, cash declaration requirements, and a list of prohibited items to ensure a smooth entry.

Understanding Vietnam Customs Regulations in 2026

When arriving in Vietnam, all travelers must pass through customs after clearing immigration. Being aware of the latest regulations is crucial to avoid fines, confiscation of goods, or legal issues. Whether you are arriving with a Vietnam eVisa or a visa exemption, these customs rules apply uniformly across all 33 international entry ports in the country.

Duty-Free Allowances

Vietnam offers generous duty-free limits for personal use. If you exceed these allowances, you must declare them and pay the necessary taxes. As of 2026, the duty-free limits for travelers (aged 18 and older) are as follows:

  • Alcohol over 22% ABV: 1.5 liters
  • Alcohol under 22% ABV: 2.0 liters
  • Beer and alcoholic beverages: 3.0 liters
  • Cigarettes: 200 cigarettes
  • Cigars: 20 cigars
  • Tobacco: 250 grams
  • Personal belongings: A reasonable quantity for your trip's duration.
  • Other items: Total value not exceeding 10,000,000 VND (approx. $400 USD).

If you carry items exceeding these limits, proceed to the Red Channel to make a declaration. Otherwise, use the Green Channel.

Cash Declaration Limits

There are strict regulations regarding the amount of cash you can carry in or out of Vietnam without declaring it. You must fill out a customs declaration form if you are carrying:

  • More than $5,000 USD (or equivalent in other foreign currencies).
  • More than 15,000,000 VND (Vietnamese Dong) in cash.
  • Precious metals or gemstones with a value exceeding 300 million VND.

Failing to declare excess cash can result in heavy fines or confiscation of the undeclared amount at the border.

Banned and Prohibited Items

To maintain national security and public safety, Vietnam strictly prohibits the import of certain items. Bringing these into the country can lead to severe legal consequences, including imprisonment.

  • Narcotics and illegal drugs (carrying drugs carries severe penalties).
  • Weapons, ammunition, explosives, and military technical equipment.
  • Toxic chemicals and radioactive materials.
  • Anti-government materials, reactionary publications, and pornography.
  • Firecrackers of any kind.
  • Used consumer goods (such as used clothing, textiles, automobiles, and auto parts).
  • Drones and flycams (unless a specific permit has been obtained from the Ministry of Defense).

Prescription medications for personal use are allowed, but you should bring the prescription or a doctor's note, especially for strong painkillers or sedatives.

Special Regulations: Drones and Medications

Many tourists ask about bringing drones and personal medication. Drones technically require a permit from the Ministry of Defense to be flown in Vietnam. While they are sometimes allowed through customs, they can also be confiscated at the airport and returned upon departure. For medication, you may bring a maximum of 7 days' supply for addictive drugs and 10 days' supply for psychotropic drugs, accompanied by a prescription.
