Navigating immigration with two passports can be tricky. Here is everything you need to know about traveling to Vietnam with dual citizenship.
Understanding Dual Citizenship Rules for Vietnam
Vietnam allows dual citizenship in specific cases, primarily for individuals of Vietnamese descent (Viet Kieu). However, many travelers to Vietnam hold dual citizenship from two other countries. Since August 2023, Vietnam's eVisa system is open to all nationalities, allowing stays of up to 90 days. If you hold two passports, you have the flexibility to choose which passport to use for your journey, but you must follow strict consistency rules to avoid delays at immigration.
You must use the EXACT SAME passport for your Vietnam eVisa application, flight booking (ideally), and entry/exit at Vietnamese immigration.
Choosing Which Passport to Use
When deciding which passport to travel on, consider the following factors:
- **Visa Exemption:** Does one of your passports grant you a visa exemption? For instance, citizens of the UK, France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea enjoy 45 days visa-free, while ASEAN citizens get up to 30 days. Using an exempt passport saves you the eVisa fee and processing time. - **Passport Validity:** The passport you choose must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in Vietnam and have at least two blank pages. - **Travel History:** If you are visiting multiple countries, consider the visa requirements for your onward destinations.
- Check visa exemption lists before applying.
- Ensure at least 6 months of validity.
- Verify you have sufficient blank pages.
Consistency is Key: Flights and Immigration
One of the most common mistakes dual citizens make is mixing up their passports. When you apply for a Vietnam eVisa, the approval is electronically linked to the specific passport number you provided.
When checking in for your flight to Vietnam, the airline staff will verify your visa status. You must present the passport that holds the eVisa (or visa exemption). Similarly, when you arrive at one of the 33 approved entry ports in Vietnam, hand the immigration officer the same passport. Presenting a different passport will result in denied entry, as the officer will not find a valid visa associated with it.
Do not show both passports to the immigration officer unless explicitly asked. Present only the one associated with your visa or exemption.
Vietnamese Overseas (Viet Kieu) and Dual Nationals
If one of your citizenships is Vietnamese, you can enter Vietnam using your valid Vietnamese passport without needing a visa. If your Vietnamese passport has expired and you wish to travel on your foreign passport, you will need to apply for a 5-Year Visa Exemption Certificate or a standard 90-day eVisa. Always ensure your names match across your travel documents to prevent airline boarding issues.
